Sexually Transmitted Diseases/Infections
In Switzerland today, syphilis and HIV are among
the most common sexually transmitted diseases (STDs or STIs). in the last few
years the number of syphilis cases has again started to rise. This could be due
to heightened travel activity, for instance to Asian countries, as well as –
given contemporary treatment options for HIV – to the somewhat careless
behaviors concerning the transmission of HIV infection.
Open sores in the genital area, dysuria,
purulent discharge from genitalia or urethra.
Next to clinical examination based on symptoms,
laboratory testing is critical in order to diagnose the precise cause of
infection. It is the basis for determining appropriate antibiotic therapy.
Depending on lab results, appropriate, usually antibiotic, therapy is selected. For additionals information please refer to the section on syphillis serology and STI/molecular biology.
